Kitchen – This is the kitchen in my own house. I have kind of a different style and it really shows here. I just couldn’t stare at some in-stock oak cabinets and white appliances every day. As you can tell from the before pictures though, anything would have been an improvement.

Small Bathroom – This is one of the 4 bathrooms in my house. It was an exercise in budget remodeling without sacrificing quality. The floor is hardwood maple that was a store return, the toilet is a high-end model that was an unopened and outdated store display, the sink was bought at Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the faucet was a display model and the lights were a clearance item. I think the whole bathroom remodel cost me around $175. Extreme discount remodeling takes patience though. Make a mental list of what you need and when you see a deal, grab it. It might take years of shopping, but it might also save you hundreds of dollars.

Slate Backsplash – This is just a simple slate backsplash I did a while back.

Deck Cleaning – Here is an example of what a difference deck cleaning can make. I have even seen more drastic results but sadly I didn’t take pictures. Deck cleaning is a great way to improve the curb appeal of your house for usually under $100. Not to mention, when a deck is that dirty it can get really slick and dangerous when it’s wet.

Front Door – These photos illustrate the long process of replacing as front door on a Moffitt house. Howard Moffitt is best known for building the stone cottages near the intersection of Court and Muscatine, but he built many houses around Iowa City. He is known for his non-conventional building practices and re-purposing of materials. (Think salvaged bridge planks as subfloor.) This house belongs to a friend of mine and the front door was barely over 6′ tall. The rough opening was visibly out of square and there was no support under the sill, so wind and even snow would blow in under it. After a lot of preparation of the opening, the custom sized door fit like a glove with no drafts. Although most contractors in the area will not touch them, I love working on Moffitt houses more than anything. If you have a Moffitt house that needs work, I’m your man!

Family Room – This is the family room in my house. It went from a fake wood paneling nightmare to a cozy family room.
